Dear Westra Family and Friends October 21, 2006
Hi All. Monday for family home evening we had Conner and Kadan give their “presentations” or talks for the Statesmanship Club. They each took a principle out of one of their books about freedom and elaborated on it. Kadan talked about Unalienable Rights and how they are different from vested rights. Conner talked about ownership of property as a foundation for freedom, and as an incentive to work.
For Young men on Tuesday Conner and Kadan went over and played games at the church. They were going to play “Fugitive” outside but the weather was cold and rainy.
Wednesday we went on a field trip to The Redmond Salt Mine and also a Raw Milk Dairy. We had a fun time and learned a lot, but almost didn’t make it there. I finally go the new van registered and Conner put the license plate on, so we were driving it out to Redmond. We needed to get gas, but we couldn’t find the button to open the gas cap. It took the entire family several minutes, but we finally found it!
The salt mine is huge, I never knew it was so big. They have one huge truck that actually drives into the mine and brings 55 tons of salt “rock” with each load, and it makes about twenty trips a day. They put out all kinds of salt products, not just table salt. The boys each got a piece to take home.
They had a hay ride out at the dairy also, and took us out to see their chickens on the hay ride. The people who own the mine and the dairy are in our Statesmanship club (South Home School Group) so that is how we got this lined up. We had a super turnout – 40 to 50 people.
We have about 1500 neighbors now – they brought the sheep to graze in the fields, and a Peruvian shepherd and his horse and a few dogs. I just ran out and met the man, and took him a couple of apples. He doesn’t speak much English. Camden said, “He doesn’t talk like us”. He has done a great job of keeping the sheep off our property, which is nice. However, our chicken population has been reduced from six to four, and we think it was the dogs. I came back from a run to see brown feathers blowing all over in the wind (not a good sign).
I put in a food order with rawfood.com for the family, ordering some treats for the boys, and some raw chocolate powder and some raw carob pods. Well, they must have had someone new working the store, because they sent me twenty cassia pods instead of twenty carob pods. It’s a good thing I knew what they were because cassia is a powerful laxative and you only use a little at a time.
When I called them to tell them about the mistake, the man from rawfood.com on the phone joked dryly, “You didn’t eat all twenty cassia pods at once, did you?”
Friday Casandra and the boys went on another home school field trip to the dinosaur museum up at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. They also watched a movie about the caves of the earth on the huge screen at the theater there.
Tonight Casandra and I have a date out to eat with the Colloquium group, another book club associated with the Northern Home School Group. We will be discussing Pride and Prejudice. Have a super week as fall sets in.

I sold in another new country this week, Antigua and Barbuda (one country), in the Caribbean, and this makes 111 countries.
I’ve been enjoying working on my new tell a friend project, and also learning about cascading style sheets, which is a new (for me) way of formatting web pages. It’s much easier once you learn it.
Josh encouraged me to try Expression Web, a new html editor that is replacing Frontpage, which I have been using. You can download the new trial version for free, and I encourage all of you with websites to try it. You can download it from:
Expression
Web
It took about four hours to download on my DSL connection, so it is huge! Just start it loading when you are done with your computer for the day, and let it load on its own.
I’m still exploring the benefits and improvements. It makes the style sheets (CSS) so much easier to do.
One quick article I put up, with a free book, you can get at:
